It’s that tender mix of nerves and hope — trying to be fully yourself while also wanting to be liked.
This painting holds that feeling. The soft tension. The sincerity. The quiet courage of showing up.

Because being seen shouldn’t be occasional — it should be always.

Solo Exhibition by Lauren Ratcliffe

So last Thursday 10 April was my very first solo exhibition as a professional artist — five years after I picked up a paintbrush again, two decades after I’d last allowed myself to dream of being an artist! 🧑‍🎨

The opening night was pure magic ✨ “Not Occasional” as a show theme was born from the deep desire to be seen, to be felt, to take up space in both art and life — and what unfolded was an evening filled with so much love, laughter, support, and soul. This collection truly was seen and I’m unbelievably grateful to everyone who came to support me!

I’m also so grateful to Sam from @lumi_gallery and @curatorial_edge for “seeing” me — not just my work, but my heart behind it. Thank you in fact to all of you for believing in this collection, in this moment, and in me.

I poured myself into 37 paintings for this show… and nearly all of them have found their forever homes ❤️

To everyone who came, who shared kind words, who brought joy and presence and of course who bought my paintings (nearly all of them are sold! 🔴) — thank you.

This was never just about art on walls…It was about belonging, about being, about coming home to myself and inviting others to do the same.

Not occasional,
but constant.
Not fleeting,
but felt.

Experimenting with some #florals to compliment my latest abstract/ impressionist interiors body of work. I feel like fresh flowers bring such life and joy to a room.

And in fact I read the other day that flowers and pot plants can actually tell when you are on your way home and start to vibrate 😳… strange but true!!!

It took me hours and hours and HOURS to paint, and the messaging of this piece is about how we all chase being something we think we “should” be.

Whereas actually, the more authentic we are, the more we choose who we are rather than let others dictate it, the more fulfilled we are.

I say… let’s step OUT of the corners we put ourselves in.

“Gone but Still Here” painted in honour of our special friend @cathbothner who left this world too soon.

A shining light of excellence, loyalty, passion, family and love, Cath will never be forgotten even though she’s gone for now.

From the moment we met Cath at Red & Yellow in 2003, we all knew she would be top of the class and she was. Snapped up immediately after we graduated, she always had a crystal clear vision of where she wanted to go and she got there effortlessly 💕

I wish I had spent more time with Cath, I wish I had gotten to say goodbye to her and tell her much she inspired me and how much I admired her, and I hope she knew that.

I painted this piece the week after she passed, and I felt her presence in my studio.

May we all be reminded of our fleeting time here on earth and be grateful for as many moments and blessings as we can be mindful enough to notice.

I loved seeing these curious wild dogs emerge and test my animal painting skills for fun.

HELLO I’M LAUREN, AND I AM AN ARTIST (took me a long time to be able to say that 🤣). It’s great to meet you thank you for following my journey and supporting my art 🤗

It’s been a while since I started this page so I thought it would be great to share a few titbits about me that some of you may not know!

⭐️ My artistic journey started when I was 13 years old and I won a bursary to an afternoon art school

⭐️ I won the Art Prize throughout my school years, I was however also incredibly naughty and smoked in the artroom

⭐️ I didn’t study art because I didn’t think I was good enough/could make any money

⭐️ My 1st job was in advertising at Ogilvy where I met my husband and we ran across the roof at a party naked it’s amazing we didn’t fall off and die

⭐️ I’ve always been so passionate about helping people: my creativity came out through psychology and I spent 15 years consulting in team, leadership development and culture change

⭐️ I started an oil course when Lyn Northam 5 years ago and my passion for creating was reignited!

⭐️ I’m scared every day when I walk into my studio because I question if I can create anything “good”

⭐️ I’ve struggled with depression on and off and it’s a daily journey - but padel 🎾 helps so much 🤣 as does feeling connected with like-minded people

⭐️ I’m controlling and a perfectionist but only around my immediate family and I feel so sorry for them 🤣 as I’m relaxed around everyone else and I don’t know why!

⭐️ I used to keep my hair straight and only wear neutral colours before I started painting again…now my life is a riot of colour and curls and I way prefer it.

⭐️ I’ve travelled to 45 countries and I’m desperate to go to Lapland and Iceland soon

⭐️ I love dancing and singing and last year I was in a contemporary dance show and in a choir it was so much fun!

⭐️ Being an artist is a gift 🎁 one that I treasure and love each day even when it’s hard and I’m so grateful for the life I lead 🥰

On the one and only overcast day we’ve had this holiday (can you believe it) I sat down with this incredible view of the Heads in Knysna and painted this imaginary scene inspired by Leisure Isle sunsets just because I liked the colours 🤷‍♀️

Very special friends were leaving Bath and Ash and their circle wanted to gift them something super memorable to remind them of so very many good times.

These three pen drawings show the best of Bath including their home for the time they were there.

I hope these pieces bring so much joy 🤩 That is after all why I create - to bring myself and others joy through art.

Totally DIFFERENT! I just felt like doing something completely out of my current style inspired by something my 10 year old daughter said to me which was….“Mum… don’t give me shade” 👀 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Basically in “tween slang” this means don’t give me a hard time … and it made me think of a strong woman standing up for herself in a cool and clear way.

Also, I am loving vibrant bright colours. So… this is the painting that emerged.

Nope I’m not going to become a portrait artist 🤣 I just felt like painting this so here we are!

Totally DIFFERENT! I just felt like doing something completely out of my current style inspired by something my 10 year old daughter said to me which was….“Mum… don’t give me shade” 👀 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Basically in “tween slang” this means don’t give me a hard time … and it made me think of a strong woman standing up for herself in a cool and clear way.

Also, I am loving vibrant bright colours. So… this is the painting that emerged.

Nope I’m not going to become a portrait artist 🤣 I just felt like painting this so here we are!

This really was a BIG ONE!!!!!

A few months ago I was contacted by the most wonderful client wanting a large (2 x 1.5m) piece for their beautiful double volume staircase in their fabulous Cape Town home.

The brief (after we spent some time figuring it out together) was for an impressionist landscape scene with lots of movement and colour of the Plett beach, including the five members of the family walking together on the beach 🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒🏖️

We decided on a colour palette, I did a mood board and three preliminary paintings which we used to get clearer on their vision.

It’s incredibly important to me that my clients know what they are going to get and aren’t surprised but rather delighted 🤩 by the end result!

This reel makes the process look quick…👀 but it was in fact months.

@artlandart then framed this piece (we decided on natural wood kiaat edging) and the fabulous @hang_it_now_cc installed this efficiently and perfectly, while I delivered some bubbles 🍾 to the client to celebrate 🥳

I was very fortunate to have such a wonderful experience working on this piece for the most fabulous family and gained friends not just clients along the way!

🌿 Narratives of Cape Town 🌿

Last Thursday marked the opening of the Narratives of Cape Town exhibition at RK Contemporary, and I’m so thrilled to have three of my oil paintings on display as part of this incredible show, running until the end of January 2025.

The show is situated at RK Contemporary 16 Dixon Street in De Waterkant.

The works I have on show celebrate some of Cape Town’s most breathtaking landscapes:

1️⃣ De Villiers Dam, Constantia Nek
This iconic hiking destination shifts its mood with the weather. I sought to capture its dynamic beauty. (55 x 84cm)

2️⃣ Cape Point from Afar
With a bold red background, this piece highlights the turbulent energy of Cape Point just as the weather began to turn. (27 x 36cm) - Sold 🔴

3️⃣ Cape Point – Turquoise Waters
A more familiar view of Cape Point, where I was struck by the contrast of the turquoise water and the golden sand glowing through sunlit patches in the clouds. (55 x 84cm) - Sold 🔴

✨ The opening night was a vibrant, heartwarming event! With an awesome opening speech by Astrid!

It was also fabulous to reconnect with old artist friends, meet new ones, and feel so loved and supported by my fabulous friends @sole_lab_za , Megs Grey, @chuffyvanaardeart , @isabelcrause_artist and @joannaleemiller who were also there! And obviously my beyond fabulous husband Jon Ratcliffe.

I started this painting on my residency with @julianbrownart at @emilyball_painting and I had no idea where it was going to go.

This painting holds a sense of human presence, even if there’s no figure shown and as it’s evolved it has become to be about finding beauty in the imperfect and embracing vibrancy and light, even when our shadows and flaws are there.

The bold colours and layered forms celebrate the idea that life is full of imperfections, but that’s what makes it beautiful.

This piece invites you to see the joy and energy in the everyday, where light and shadow coexist in a way that’s raw and full of feeling.

“The Midnight Snack” 🌌

This painting has just arrived @artistsgallery_capetown 💙 I felt like being playful and a little tongue in cheek so this one is all about that feeling of tiptoeing around in the middle of the night when you are awake and can’t sleep but everyone else is fast asleep. You know the one. It’s when everything’s so still, but your thoughts are wide awake, sharp, and somehow everything feels clearer.

The deep blues I’ve used give off that hushed, dreamy vibe, like the world is fast asleep, but you’re there, wide awake, reflecting on the things that really matter.

It’s in those quiet, in-between moments that life feels the most alive, don’t you think?

I think many of us weren’t really encouraged to be creative heading into adult life, it wasn’t really seen a “serious” career where an actual living could be made.

Luckily us artists have now debunked this myth!

And it was so wonderful to hear the other day from my Dad how proud he is of me and what I’ve achieved so far in my artist career (even though I’m only at the beginning it was still so great to hear!).

Now when I ask my kids what they are really good at do you know what both of them say? “ Well Mum, I’m really creative” 💕💙.

When we first moved in to our home 4 years ago, one of the first things I did was to create warmth and coziness.

It’s super important to me to feel like I’m in a cocoon of tranquility at home, with lots of soft, textured furnishing, rugs, warm colours, plants and of course art. When I walk into our home I feel nurtured and calm.

This piece is a play on our entrance area where I’ve tried (in a very loose, quick and non-representative way without overthinking anything (!)) to capture the warmth of sunlit afternoons and the peaceful shadows of quiet rooms.

The palette is a mix of earthy terracotta and golden yellows which I think grounds the piece, while the soft blues breathe in a calm, tranquil air that I love.

This little study has gone to live with @cancer_enlightened in Somerset West/ Stellenbosch to join a few of my pieces already there! Sam you could almost host a Lauren Ratcliffe show 🤣🙏💕💕💕💙💛

When we first moved in to our home 4 years ago, one of the first things I did was to create warmth and coziness.
