Lauren Ratcliffe is a contemporary artist based in Cape Town, South Africa.

Her paintings explore the quiet emotional lives of rooms and the familiar objects that inhabit them. Chairs, tables, vessels and everyday interiors become more than furniture or places; they become silent witnesses to conversation, memory, absence and human connection.

Working primarily in oil, acrylic and ink, Lauren builds richly layered surfaces where bold colour, fluid mark-making and dissolving edges create paintings that feel both familiar and dreamlike. Rather than documenting a room as it appears, she paints the lingering energy it holds long after people have left.

After a successful career spanning more than fifteen years in psychology, leadership development and business, Lauren chose to pursue painting full time. Her understanding of people continues to shape her practice, informing an ongoing investigation into the emotional residue held within domestic spaces and the way ordinary objects quietly carry our stories.

Recent work has become increasingly focused on interiors and chairs as psychological spaces. Through experimentation with ink, bleach, layered paint and intuitive processes, she explores the tension between presence and absence, clarity and memory, allowing images to emerge, dissolve and reappear.

While her paintings are often vibrant and inviting, they ask a quieter question beneath the surface: what do the spaces we inhabit remember about us?

Lauren has exhibited throughout South Africa, and her work is held in private collections locally and internationally. She continues to develop a distinctive body of work that celebrates the beauty, complexity and emotional weight of everyday life.
